What is rake (and why you should care)
In every cash game pot, the room or club takes a small commission: the rake. It's usually around 5% of the pot with a cap per hand. Sounds small — but it compounds: a regular at micro-to-mid stakes can generate hundreds of dollars in rake per month without noticing.
That cost is invisible during a session and enormous over a year. That's why serious players don't just study their cards: they track how much rake they pay and how much they get back.
What is rakeback
Rakeback is the return of a percentage of the rake you generated. Generate $100 of rake in a week on a 40% deal, and $40 comes back — regardless of how your sessions went. It's the only poker "win" that doesn't depend on variance.
For a volume player, rakeback can turn a break-even month into a winning one. That's why we say rakeback isn't a perk — it's part of your winrate.
The questions to ask before choosing where to play
- What percentage do they return, and under what conditions? Distrust giant numbers with fine print.
- How often do they pay? Weekly is the healthy standard; "whenever we can" is a red flag.
- What is it calculated on? Real generated rake, not confusing formulas.
- Do you have to chase it, or does it arrive automatically? Serious deals are automatic and verifiable.
