A mystery bounty is the fastest-growing tournament format in poker, and the hook is simple: every knockout becomes a sealed envelope. A bounty is the prize you collect for eliminating an opponent; in a mystery bounty, its value is secret — it might be a tiny amount, or a prize bigger than first place money. Nobody knows until the envelope opens.
How the format works
The prize pool is split in two halves. One pays regular finishing positions, like any tournament. The other becomes randomly valued bounties: lots of small ones, some mid-sized, and a few giants that carry the format's appeal.
Here's the detail many players miss: bounties are not live from hand one. The tournament has two phases. Phase one plays like a normal online tournament — knocking someone out earns you nothing extra. Bounties activate in phase two, usually once the field reaches the money or day 2 begins. From that point on, every player you bust hands you an envelope.
The real adjustment: your chips are worth more when you cover
Once bounties go live, the math changes. If you cover an opponent's stack — you have more chips than they do — busting them pays instantly, so your chips carry extra value that classic ICM doesn't capture. In practice: against a short stack shoving all-in, you can call somewhat lighter than usual, because the envelope adds prize money to the pot.
Somewhat lighter. Not with anything. The mistake that funds good players in this format is chasing envelopes with junk: the bounty adjusts the calculation, it doesn't replace it. If a hand is too weak to call with in a normal tournament, an average envelope rarely makes it good.
By stack: hunter or hunted
Big stack: you hold a hunting license. Pressure the medium stacks, call wider against shorts you cover, and remember every knockout is instant money plus chips.
Short stack: your own envelope makes you a target — people will call you lighter than ever. Shove first and with discipline: your own all-in keeps the pressure on your side; waiting for the decision to come to you leaves you unarmed.
Everyone: with the whole table willing to overcall for bounties, bluffing loses value. Bluff less, bet bigger for value: you will get paid.
The honest part
The envelope is pure luck. You can bust five players and pull five minimum prizes while the player next to you pulls the giant on their first knockout. What is skill is everything before that: reaching the bounty phase with chips, picking the right spots to call, and not torching your tournament chasing envelopes. And since the format runs hotter on variance, your bankroll management needs to keep up.
The lesson
In a mystery bounty you play two tournaments: a normal one until bounties activate, and a hunt afterwards. The player who switches modes on time — and adjusts without losing discipline — collects the value that envelope chasers give away for free.
