A poker range is the complete set of hands a player can hold in a specific situation. Here's the truth that upgrades your game: you'll never know your opponent's exact two cards — and you don't need to. Players who ask "what does he have?" are guessing. Players who ask "which hands would he play this way?" are playing poker.
Why single-hand thinking fails
Put your opponent on ONE hand ("he has AK, I'm sure") and every decision becomes a coin flip on your guess: right and you look like a genius, wrong and the whole plan collapses. Single-hand reads can't be tested or improved — they're hunches wearing a strategy costume.
Range thinking flips the logic. Instead of a guess, you work with a set: "from that seat, with that raise size, he gets here with big pairs, strong broadways and some suited connectors." Against a set of hands you can count, compare and decide. Against a hunch you can only hope.
How ranges are written
The notation is simpler than it looks, and every study tool uses it:
- AA, KK, QQ — specific pairs. "TT+" means every pair from tens up.
- AKs / AKo — "s" means suited (same suit), "o" means offsuit.
- 66-JJ — every pocket pair between sixes and jacks.
- Tight vs loose — a tight player enters with few hands, a loose one with many. Their preflop range already tells that story.
Building the read, street by street
A range isn't a snapshot: it's a film you keep editing with every action.
Preflop: position defines the range
An open from early position is far stronger than an open from the button — with eight players left to act, nobody gets frisky. If you haven't locked down your own opening ranges yet, start with starting hands: your preflop range is the foundation everything else sits on.
Postflop: every action prunes the range
Every bet, call and check removes combinations. Villain called a K72 flop and barreled when the turn paired the 7? Ask: which hands from his starting range do exactly that? It's the same process as hand reading — just with method instead of vibes.
Your range is being read too
Here's what most recreational players forget: the regulars are running this exercise on YOU. If you only bet big with made hands, your range turns transparent — and transparent ranges don't get paid. That's why bluffing belongs inside a balanced range: it's not rebellion, it's math.

Next session, pick ONE opponent and one hand they show down. Rewind the film: did the hand they revealed make sense with every action they took?
