EPT Barcelona 2026 kicks off this Sunday, and among dozens of events one breaks the mold: a €2,200 tournament where the bubble — the phase every tournament player dreads — simply doesn't exist. It's called "In the Money at 180,000" and works exactly as it sounds: reach 180,000 chips and you're in the money.
The facts
The festival runs August 16-29 at Casino Barcelona, headlined as always by the €5,300 Main Event (August 22-29). The new event runs August 17-27: under the format, any player who builds a 180,000-chip stack bags it on the spot, locks up a Day 2 seat and guarantees a cash — no waiting for anyone else to bust. The traditional bubble, going out one spot short of the money, is designed out of the tournament entirely.
The rest of the schedule keeps its usual standard: a €100,000 Super High Roller (August 21-23), a €3,250 Mystery Bounty (August 25-27) and a €10,300 High Roller to close. The bar is high — the 2025 edition crowned Thomas Eychenne for more than €1.2 million against the third-largest field in tour history. And from August 23 the festival streams live for free, prime material for studying elite poker from home.
Why it matters: every structure demands its own strategy
First, the terms. The bubble is the stretch of a tournament just before the payouts, where the fear of leaving empty-handed distorts almost everyone's decisions. That's where ICM comes in — the model that converts your chips into real prize equity — and near the bubble it pushes players toward caution. This format flips that logic: if cashing depends on accumulating rather than surviving, the incentive is well-chosen aggression, not retreat.
It also creates a decision no standard tournament offers: as you approach 180,000, do you bag now or keep building a bigger Day 2 stack? It's the satellite dilemma, inverted.
